Sorcha Jean

Sorcha Jean is a multidisciplinary artist based in London, captivated by contrast, shadows, form, and movement.

Contrast is featured across Sorcha’s work, not only by use of monochromatic colours, prominent shadows and exaggerated reflections, but by the themes encompassed in the work itself. Themes such as outward stillness vs. a busy mind.

Juxtaposed futuristic and traditional representations can be observed in Sorcha’s work through both portraits and figure paintings, which are often displayed to be experiencing a physical or emotional transitionary phase or internal battle.

Having grown up in north-west London with Jamaican and Irish heritage, Sorcha draws inspiration from both her immediate surroundings and experiences, and maternal Jamaican background in conjunction with the African diaspora.

Working primarily with acrylic paint or oil pastels, Sorcha actively explores a range of different mediums according to the nature and intention of the piece. This includes oil paint, UV paint, pens and clay sculpture.

“All of my creative endeavours are a form of communication, like an unwritten language that facilitates interpretation of all the words unspoken and stories untold -of which there are plenty.

My verbal expression pales in comparison to my ongoing, often unrelenting thoughts, and thus my art is a means by which I give voice to those. Not necessarily to communicate with others, but simply to express, to exert, to articulate, dispel, self-reflect -whatever it is that I require of the work and the work requires of me.

To me, art is so vulnerable, yet necessary. “
