Malaina Joseph Sobers

Malaina Joseph-Sobers, born in Suriname and raised in Guyana, a former Britsih Colony, spent her early years amidst the post-colonial tensions of the 1980s and 1990s. Moving to London at sixteen, she found herself navigating the complex layers of urban identity, while holding onto her Guyanese roots. Joseph-Sobers' undergraduate studies at Goldsmiths University of London marked a pivotal moment in her artistic journey, as she began exploring her heritage and identity, creating a self-portrait that juxtaposed her migration story with the historic ‘Windrush’ voyage from the Caribbean to Britain. This exploration unveiled the intrinsic link between her cultural, personal, and creative identities, allowing her to access previously suppressed cultural memories.
