Sankofa Chronicles

An Exhibition by Tóyọ̀sí Saliu

 19th-31st May

Step into the world of Tóyọ̀sí Saliu, a London-based artist whose oil paintings skillfully merge realism, symbolism, and cultural heritage to craft a story that is both deeply personal and universally resonant. In Sankofa Chronicles, Tóyọ̀sí invites us to reflect, remember, and reclaim — through visual storytelling that bridges the past with the present.

Trained in Art and Design at Lewisham College and holding a BA from the University for the Creative Arts, Tóyọ̀sí’s mastery of technique is evident in every brushstroke. Her work draws powerfully from her own heritage as well as her own research into pre colonial life in West Africa , weaving traditional West African attire, 24-carat gold, and richly layered symbolism into striking portraits that radiate divine strength, elegance, and spirit.

Sankofa Chronicles is a tribute to the unyielding beauty and resilience of West African  cultures — a visual journey through identity, spirituality, and the enduring narratives that have shaped West African life.

Each painting is a vessel of memory and meaning, reflecting on what has been lost, what has endured, and what must be reclaimed.

Through her fascination with symbols, traditional writing systems , and the tension between the spiritual and the primal, Tóyọ̀sí explores themes that touch on psychology, philosophy, and the human condition. Her work is a seamless balance of contemporary aesthetics and timeless archetypes — creating an immersive, thought-provoking experience that counter dominant cultural narratives about Africa and her history.
